The line is 10.6km long, with 1.9 km at-grade through a pedestrian mall (in the central area) and 8.7km in tunnel, of which 2.5km was constructed using the cut-and-cover technique, and 6.2km was excavated by boring machines. It is called a light rail line, but it operates in a subway and in a traffic-free street. The underground section is completely accessible to the disabled, but the pedestrian mall segment utilizes small ramps located around entrances; otherwise, passengers climb up some steps. Metro Rail is operated by Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. The trains operate at about 29 km/h in the central, at-grade section. The average ridership is about 25,000 passengers a day.

An extension from what is now called 'University Station' but was until recently known as 'South Campus', for the south campus of the Buffalo branch of the state university, to the northern campus (which is 5.25 km further on) has been planned for years, but appears to have basically been buried with the renaming. Extensions are unlikely, anyway, given the stagnant local economy which has made this system one of the few unsuccessful (in terms of bringing new development and activity to the corridor) recently-constructed light rail systems. |
