Gauteng Metrorail Network

- suburban railway, operated by Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA)

- several lines radiating from Johannesburg city centre, linking cities like Pretoria, Soweto, Germiston and Krugersdorp in the entire province of Gauteng

- 4-6 train per hour during peak times, every 30-90 minutes during off-peak daytime service

- 1067 mm - narrow gauge - electrified at 3000 V dc with overhead wire

- some routes shared with infrequent long-distance services

Gautrain

- regional express rail system (80 km) between Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport
- 15 km underground through the northern suburbs of Johannesburg

- 08 June 2010: OR Tambo International Airport - Sandton
- 02 Aug 2011: Sandton - Rosebank; Marlboro - Hatfield
- 07 June 2012: Rosebank - Johannesburg Park

- 1435 mm gauge - electrified at 25 kV ac
