 System

Pl. Lenina © Aare Olander 1992Volgograd (the former Stalingrad) operates a large tram network (216 km, 27 km on reserved track). In 1984, a 13.5 km long light rail line was inaugurated running north - south, parallel to the river Volga, in order to relieve a very crowded suburban rail line. The line, called Skorostnoy Tramvaj (Express Tram) includes a 3.3 km long tunnel section which was built to metro standards with two underground stations with island platforms.

Trams used are of the TATRA KT8D5 and TATRA T3 type common in Eastern Europe.
