 System

Roma Metro LogoThe capital of Italy, Rome, is one of the most ancient cities in Europe and has 3 million inhabitants.

The 2-line system has an X shape, with both lines meeting at the Central Railway Station Termini. The first line, line B south, was built from Termini to Laurentina for the World Exhibition in 1955 (11 km, 6 km underground). Many years later, in 1990, the northern branch to Rebibbia was finally opened (8 km, 7 km underground).

Line A between Anagnina in the south and Ottaviano in the north-west near Vatican City opened in 1980 (14,5 km, almost all underground). May 29, 1999, the first stretch of an 4.5km extension north-west was put into service (Cipro-Musei Vaticani and Valle Aurelia). The final 3 stations, Baldo degli Ubaldi, Cornelia and Battistini finally opened on 1 January 2000.

Total length of the network after opening of line B1 will be 41.2 km.

Apart from the Metropolitana there are several suburban and tram lines in and around the city of Rome. Whereas most FM lines (Ferrovia Metropolitana) share tracks with other railways, the Roma-Lido (opened in 1924 to link Rome to the coastal town of Ostia) and the Roma-Viterbo (1932) lines offer a metro-like service.

 Projects

After several years of announcements construction on Line B1, a branch off line B from Bologna to Jonio (4.5 km, 3 intermediate stations - , Annibaliano, Gondar, Conca d'Oro) seems to be underway for completion in autumn 2010. The formerly planned Nomentana station has been cancelled. The terminus Jonio will provide transfer to the planned Line D one day.

An extension of Line B beyond Rebibbia is also in planning stage.

Metropolitana Line C
The light rail line to Pantano in the southeast (17.8 km) was converted to metro standard between Torrenova and Pantano, to be later integrated into Line C. The line is still operated with light rail vehicles, so rebuilt stations have a short low-floor section, whereas the remaining part of the platform is ready to take metro cars in the future.

A new section is being built underground through the city centre and via Vatican to the north. Once finished Line C will be 30 km long and have 35 stations. Possible completion dates have been revised time and again, but the line is likely to open in various stages after 2012.

Line D is planned to run north-south parallel to the existing Line B.
