In Málaga, Andalucia, a similar system to the one under construction in Seville is planned. This will be a light rail system, using low-floor trains, with two lines radiating from the city centre towards the west, running mostly underground. Both lines share a common stretch in the city centre. Construction is scheduled to start in autumn 2005.

At Renfe the future metro provides interchange with the existing Cercanías (suburban) line to the Airport and Fuengirola, and to the mainline services (AVE high speed link to Córdoba and Madrid now under construction).

In 2006, the first tramway in Andalusia opened 30 km further east, in Vélez-Málaga.
