Brescia's metropolitan area has about 450,000 inhabitants and lies approximately 85 km east of Milan, in Lombardy, northern Italy.

In July 2000, tenders were invited for an automated 13 km long automated light metro, similar to the Copenhagen metro, with a deep-level tube tunnel under the city centre. The system, initially referred to as Metrobus, was to be developed within 7 years with construction start in 2003, but after some delays it will open in 2012. 39 m long and 2.65 m wide trains will serve 17 stations, all equipped with platform screen doors.
