Brescia's metropolitan area has about 600,000 inhabitants and lies approximately 85 km east of Milan, in Lombardia, northern Italy. In July 2000, tenders have been invited for an automated 18 km long automated light metro, similar to the Copenhagen metro. 5.8 km will be in a deep tunnel under the city centre, 900 m will be just under the surface and the remaining 11.3 km will be on a viaduct. The system, referred to as Metrobus, was to be developed within 7 years with construction start in 2003, but after some delays it will open in 2010 at the earliest. In 2002, the initial project was modified and a northern section added. This one will be built in a second phase together with the western leg. The metro will be complemented by three express bus services and help to reduce traffic in the city centre by building 11 car parks adjacent to metro stations. 30 m long and 2.5 m wide trains will serve 23 stations (8 of which will be underground), all equipped with platform screen doors. |
