 Project

Belgrade (Beograd), the capital of Serbia, which was once part of Yugoslavia, is planning a light rail network which consists of three lines. The project was presented to the public on 3 July 2004.

The system called BELAM (Beograd Laki Metro) will be carried out by Yuginus and the Spanish company Ineco. Construction is scheduled to start in 2006 for completion in 2012.

Line 1 - Centralna (2008) - will link Novi Beograd on the left bank of the Sava river to the city centre and the eastern suburbs. Planned stations are:

Tvornička Ulica - Stari Merkator - Opština Novi Beograd [Line 3] - Palata Federacije - Šest Kaplara (near Hyatt Hotel) [Sava] - Saborna Crkva - Trg Republike - Trg Nikole Pašića - Pravni Fakultet (Law School) [Line 2] - Vukov Spomenik [Beovoz] - Đeram - Cvetkova Mehana - Kluz - Ustanička Ulica

The line will run underground from Saborna crkva to Vukov spomenik, total length will be 12.5 km, from which about 4.6 km will be underground, with 20 stations.

Line 2 - Vračarska (2010) - will only run on the left bank of the Sava river. All stations except Hipodrom-Topcider will be underground:

Pravni Fakultet [Line 1] - Slavija - Klinički Centar - Prokop (new railway station) - Sajam - Hipodrom-Topčider

Line 3 - Savska (2012) - will link the southern suburbs to Novi Beograd, running underground from Banovo Drdo to Pozeska Ulica:

Palata Federacije [Line 1] - Arena - Železnička Stanica Novi Beograd [Beovoz] - Ada Ciganlija - Hipodrom-Topčider [Line 2] - Banovo Brdo - Ulica Blagoja Parovića - Požeška Ulica

The new light rail system will complement the existing tram and Beovoz suburban rail network, which has two underground stations in the city centre, Vukov Spomenik and Karađorđev park.
