ALICANTE . ALACANT
 Comunitat Valenciana . Spain

 System

Alicante (Alacant in Valencian) is the second largest conurbation in the Comunitat Valenciana, an autonomous region in Eastern Spain. The metropolitan area is home to some 430,000 people, rising to 750,000 in the entire Alacant/Elx (Alicante/Elche) region.

The existing diesel operated line between Alicante and Denia is being upgraded (double track) and electrified as far as Altea, with an urban tram service up to El Campello.

Mercado © Seth MorganThe project includes an underground section in the Alicante city centre, from the central railway station towards the east, with four underground stations, Mercado station being the most important one. The first tunnel section was brought into service in May 2007, with L3 now providing service between Mercado and El Campello/Venta Lanuza, and L4 between Puerta del Mar and Av. Naciones. L1 is an express service that links with hourly regional services to Dénia and Benidorm at its present terminus Creueta.

The Alicante tram is operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Valencia (FGV), also responsible for the Valencia Metro.
