The holy city of Mashhad is the second-largest metropolitan area in Iran, and the capital of the north-eastern province of Khorasan. It has a population of more than 2.2 million.

Mashhad's "Urban Railway" is a completely segregrated light rail system, using low-floor rolling stock manufactured by CNR Changchung. The first line now in operation is an 18 km east-west route with 22 stations, of which about 9 km and 11 stations are underground. Construction works began in Dec. 1999.

 History

24 April 2011: Trial service on line 1 started

10 Oct 2011: Torghabeh - Ghadir (official inauguration, 18 km).

06 Feb 2016: Ghadir - Airport (4.5 km)

 Projects

Line 2 will run north-south between Koohsangi and Tabarsi and include 12 stations. It will intersect with the existing metro line 1 and the future lines 3 and 4 as well as with the national railway line of Iran. The total length of line 2 is approximately 14.3 km of which approximately 10.8 km will be constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM).
