 System

The Turkish capital has some 3.5 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area. Currently there are two types of metro lines in service:

ANKARAY

This is a light metro that runs between Dikimevi and ASTI: 8.5km (6.6km in tunnel, Emek station above ground), 11 stations, opened Aug. 30, 1996 after 4 years of construction work.

- average station distance 790m, 90m long platforms, 750 Vdc, third rail, built by Siemens as a turnkey system
- transfer to Metro at Kizilay and to suburban trains at Kurtulus. A major bus terminal is situated at ASTI.

METRO

runs as a full automatic metro line from Kizilay to Batikent (14.6km). Opened in autumn 1997 (construction work started 4 years earlier), it has 12 stations, and consists of 6.5km underground running, 4.9km surface, and 3.2km elevated.

- 3rd rail power supply (750V)
- average station distance 1.2km
- magnetic cards, ticket barrier
- stations equipped with 2 elevators from street level to platform
- 3-car-trains, 6 during peak hours, ATC and ATO operation, built by Bombardier and SNC-Lavalin as a turnkey system

 Projects

ANKARAY - planned extensions from Maltepe north to Etlik (5.7km), from Kurtulus north-east to Hasköy (4km) and from Dikimevi south-east to Dogukent (7.7km).
Bids for the following extensions were submitted in Sept. 2000: Asti - Köy Hizmetleri (5.7 km) and Dikimevi - Sitaler / Önder Mahallesi (4 km)

METRO - the following extensions are currently under construction:

- from Kizilay to Çayyolu (18 km) along Eskisehir Road;
- from Ulus to Keçiören (7.9 km);
- from Batikent to Sincan (18 km).

An extension south from TBMM to Dikmen is planned (4.8 km).

Metro - 6:00-24:00 - every 3-5 min during rush hours, every 8-9 minutes during daytime and evening

Ankaray - 6:15-24:00 - 3-5 min headway (2 min possible)
